The MacFarlanes are descended from Arkil who brought his clan from Northumbria to the Scottish Highlands.

The first Thorogood possibly came to England from Normandy.

Members of the Thorogood family have lived in Hertfordshire since at least the 1100s. Arthur Thorogood migrated to Australia from Hertfordshire.

In Hertfordshire, the Thorogood’s mainly lived in the River Lee Valley, mostly in Ware and Hoddesdon. The Surridges came from Sacombe (originally spelled “Sacomb”). Sacombe is a small rural village. In 1991 its population was 185.
